Faerie Films Urges Law Makers To Support
Healthy Schools Now Act
Film Company encourages passage of SB 12 and
SB 965
Aliso Viejo, CA – August 25, 2005 –
Faerie Films, LLC today expressed its support
for legislation under consideration in the California
Assembly. The Healthy Schools Now Act introduced
by Senator Martha Escutia (D- Montebello) includes
two bills to ensure healthier snacks, meals and
beverages are available in California schools
to help students make healthy choices. Faerie
Films is presently in production of a full-length,
theatrical-release documentary titled Vending
Machine. The film examines children's health issues
from the point-of-view of several school age children
that are targeted by deficient school food programs,
fast food marketing, social pressures, and today’s
fast paced lives.
“Faerie Films is pleased to be working with
California’s leaders to help pass the Healthy
Schools Now Act which will improve nutrition at
our public schools. We urge the legislature to
support these bills and send a clear message to
the state’s school children that their nutrition
needs are being addressed," stated Jennifer
Mattox, founder of Faerie Films and director
of the documentary Vending Machine.
SB 12 would require snack foods sold through vending
machines and snack bars to meet a 35-10-35 standard,
meaning no more than 35 percent of the snack food’s
calories can come from fat; no more than 10 percent
from saturated fat; and no more than 35 percent
from sugar. SB 965 would restrict the sale of
soda and other highly sweetened beverages on high
school campuses.
One high school student sees all parties as responsible
for the current state of nutrition in California’s
public schools. “It's not a kid’s
fault that they crave junk food, it’s tasty.
They've been offered junk food since they were
small children in elementary school. It's what
happens when you spend six hours of the day in
a school that sells and promotes snacks high in
fat, sugar, sodium, and calories. Now I realize
that schools are just as responsible as our parents
in shaping us,” commented Alyssa Aguilar,
a senior at Venice High School.
“Together we will work to empower students,
and enable them to make healthier choices and
live more vibrant lives,” stated Jacqueline
Domac, Faerie Films advisory council member
and health educator and policy consultant, Los
Angeles Unified School District.
