“Food For Thought” Contest
Rallies Students Nationwide to Voice their Concerns
about Food, Nutrition and Health
Aliso Viejo, CA – July 6, 2005 – Faerie
Films recognizes that sometimes the best stories
about what goes on at school and in a kid’s
world often comes from the kids themselves. In
support of youth health and nutrition programs,
Faerie Films, the Aliso Viejo based film company
invites students from coast to coast to enter
the "Food For Thought" contest beginning
today. Whether it's specific to school lunches,
fast food, or snacks on the run, school age kids
are encouraged to submit their personal stories
about what they eat and how it affects them in
250 words or less online at www.faeriefilms.com/foodforthought/,
or by mail before December 31, 2005. Students
who have overcome disease or chronic conditions
such as diabetes, asthma, ADHD, gastroenteritis,
and even cancer by using whole food-source remedies
are also encouraged to submit their personal success
story. Faerie Films also wants to know about children
who are currently enduring a disease or condition
and how it affects their daily lives at home and
at school. The most insightful, moving and impactful
stories will be featured in the upcoming documentary,
Vending Machine.
Faerie Films is encouraging educators, teachers,
and local health officials to incorporate this
contest into their health and fitness curriculum.
“It’s important that students take
an active, ownership role in issues concerning
their health and well being,” stated Jacqueline
Domac, Health Educator and Policy Consultant,
Los Angeles Unified School District. “I
have found that when they participate in the process,
the outcome is positive.”
Five grand prize winners will each receive cash
prizes of $500. In addition, each winner will
receive nutrition and fitness counseling from
the movie’s panel of experts. Five runners-up
will also win movies passes valued at $100 each.
“The "Food For Thought" contest
creates a unique forum for gathering real-life
stories from kids that can help adults address
what’s going on with their health and nutrition,"
said Jennifer
Mattox, president of Faerie Films, and director
of Vending Machine. "We want to give children
freedom to express the issues that affect them,
and assure them that we are listening to their
needs and doing what we can to help.”
Faerie Films believes that the current state of
youth health and fitness in the country needs
immediate attention, from kids, their parents
– everyone. Nearly two-thirds of the country
is clinically overweight or obese, and children’s
diseases caused by poor or inadequate nutrition
are rising at alarming rates. The upcoming documentary,
Vending Machine, which is presently in pre-production,
will address these issues as seen from the point-of-view
of several authentic school age children which
are being targeted by fast food marketing, deficient
school food programs, social pressures, and today’s
fast paced lives.
